Since our Capturing Appalachia Photography Contest is now closed, Appalachia Bare thought it would be interesting to feature a gallery of photographers and cameras from bygone days. These images are not Appalachia-specific. Instead, they feature photographers throughout the United States and the world. These types of cameras, however, were used by Appalachians, as evidenced by my mother’s old cameras:
We thought the images might open the window to cameras our ancestors may have used to capture their own images. Some images, though, are just so quirky, we had to include them. Please enjoy the following galleries. The time periods span between the 19th and 20th centuries.

PHOTOGRAPHY DURING THE FIRST WORLD WAR (Q 24087) Ernest Brooks, the first British official photographer to be appointed, seen in a trench on the Western Front. He is carrying a Goerz Anschutz plate camera. Brooks served as a photographer on the Western Front from March to 1916 to early 1919. He also covered the Dardanelles Campaign in 1915, the Italian Front and naval subjects. After the war he returned to press photography. Copyright: © IWM.
