Appalachia Bare has received requests to extend our contest deadline due to Helene’s devastation in our region. We have heard you. First, Appalachia Bare offers our deep, heartfelt condolences to the people in our region. The losses and ruin are so heartbreaking. The path of destruction was 400 miles from landfall, and the extent of the damage is likely in the hundreds of millions. As of this writing, the death toll is 230.

  1. Create a short story that includes one of the following Appalachian folklore creatures:

  • Grassman

  • Kentucky Hellhound

  • Pope Lick Monster
  • Sheepsquatch
  • Skunk Monkey
  • Snarly Yow
  • Tennessee Wildman
  • Tommyknockers
  • Veggieman
  • Virginia Devil Monkey
  • CattaWampus
  • Woodbooger
  • Yahoo

  1. Only one short story per person, not to exceed 1,500 words (title not included). Entries over 1,500 words will not be considered.
  2. Work must be human generated and original.
  3. Contest submissions must be attached in an email to submissions@appalachiabare.com with the word “contest” in the subject line. Submissions must be in Microsoft Word.doc or doc.x or PDF format. Google docs will not be considered.
  4. Please also include a cover letter with your name, contact information, and a third person bio of 100 words or less.
  5. Deadline for contest submissions is midnight on January 8, 2025.
  6. Appalachia Bare staff is not eligible for this contest.
  7. Winners will be announced February 12, 2025 and will be published beginning March 05, 2025.

 

Awards

First Prize
This recipient will receive, via the United States Postal Service, a $100.00 pre-paid VISA card and a certificate award. The first-place story will be featured as such in Appalachia Bare.

 

Second Prize
This recipient will receive, via the United States Postal Service, a $50.00 pre-paid VISA card and a certificate award. The second-place story will be featured as such in Appalachia Bare.

 

Third Prize
This recipient will receive, via the United States Postal Service, a $25.00 pre-paid VISA card and a certificate award. The third-place story will be featured as such in Appalachia Bare.

 

Honorable Mention
This recipient will receive, via the United States Postal Service, a certificate award. The Honorable Mention story will be featured as such in Appalachia Bare.

 

Reminder

Please be sure to include a cover letter with your submission which contains name, address, phone number, email, and a short (100 words or less), third person bio. If we don’t have your address, we can’t send your award. And that would make us sad.
