Announcing Winners for Appalachia Bare's Folklore Short Story Contest

We offer our heartfelt thanks to everyone who submitted to Appalachia Bare’s Folklore Short Story Contest! Each story was well-crafted, well-told, and highly entertaining. Such great tales made our decisions very challenging. In fact, we awarded two honorable mentions. We appreciate the writing talents of all our contestants, yet we also understand that some achievements shine a bit brighter. We painstakingly and carefully considered each tale, reading and re-reading, before making our choices.

Thank You, again, to every writer who entered a story. Keep writing and telling your tale. We believe all your voices are vital to our region. As always, Appalachia Bare is grateful for your interest and support. 1. I am OVER THE MOON about this! Thank you so much. After several years of writing and who knows how many rejections, this will be my first published piece.

If there’s anyone out there feeling frustrated or discouraged: KEEP GOING. Keep reading. Keep writing. Keep submitting. This industry is wildly subjective. A lot of people won’t even like my story, and on any other platform, with any other panel, or at any other time, the results might have been different.

You will find your voice, you will find your audience, and your time will come; but only if you KEEP. GOING.

Congrats to everyone who placed — I can’t wait to read your stories. And congrats to everyone who found the time, energy, and courage to put themselves out there. That in itself is a win.

  2. Oh my goodness – I am so honored and grateful! What a great contest. I can’t wait to read it all!

    Hello Adam,
“Dusty,” as the First Place story, was published last night. Each of the other winning stories will be published over the next four weeks. Look for “Soldier’s Song” by Danita Dodson next Wednesday. We hope you enjoy them as much as we did!

    Best regards,
    Tom
