“A Day in the Garden” by Kaitlyn Brown

I watch her tend the briar patches
How she gasps, breathless with every new bloom.
How she crumbles dirt in her hands
And sips tea while she jots down garden plans.

I watch her smell the echinacea,
How she picks all of her strawberries.
How she waters everything,
Even when her arm is in a sling.

I watch her prune and trim the grapes
How she sprays earth and oil at pests
How she builds foundations from stone
And watches plants like she would her own.

Most of all, I watch her
Wander about her garden,
Near-waltzing through rows of
Tomatoes and lilies,
Through okra, peppers, and fig trees,
And I see how she has found home.

Then I in turn watch, breathless
At the beauty that then surrounds me,
Inspired by my mother’s creativity.

My name is Katie. I love to hike, drink tea, and hang out with family. I grew up in Arizona and Texas, and am now living in Tennessee. I have bachelor’s degrees in English and Spanish, and a Master’s degree in English literature from University of North Texas. I am currently teaching English at Pellissippi State and editing manuscripts for local authors. I hope to eventually edit and teach full time. I LOVE what I do and want to continue doing it!
